DNA extraction

In our science class, we did a DNA extraction. We did the extraction on animal and plant DNA. I did the plant extraction. First what I did in the plant extraction, was I got a tube filled with strawberry juice. Next I Got a mixture of ingredients such as salt and alchahol. Once I got the ingredients, I grabed each of them one by one and placed them into the strawberry juice and swirled, not shaked the ingredients around. After I swirled the ingredients around, I added another ingredient and without swirling or shaking, I left it there for about 5-10 minutes. Once ten minutes were up, I looked at the strawberry juice and I saw the strawberry plants DNA floating around.

Wildfire Destroy 25 Homes in Texas

In central Texas, a wild fire that was started by a fallen power line destroyed many homes in Texas. Once the power line fell and lite the ground, the fire continued throughout Bastrop which is about 30 miles southeast of Austin. As the fire roamed Bastrop, it was moving like a fuse leading to a bomb, but the fuse was grass and trees, and the bomb was the houses. This wild fire would've kept on moving throughout Texas but luckily, helicopters and other air flyers, dumped water from above. Even though 25 houses was pretty bad to have lost, if the firefighters and other officials hadn't come, many more houses would've been distroyed. The next day, house residents tried to salvage what was left of their house and hopefully the police can get them a new.

In New York City, a harmless smell which drifted through roads of the city at least nine times since 2005, was traced to a place across the Hudson River that processes seeds for use as artificial flavorings. This place was, New Jersey. Mayor Michael Bloomberg said a team of odor investigators, environmental protectionists, and the health department found some clues that where used to identify the culprit after another smell in January. The investigation had people mapping the time and place of every odor that came from New Jersey to New York by having people call the 311 hot line. The time was checked with air sampling tests during these periods of time that New Yorkers reported smelling the odor. Reporters also noticed that every time they got a whiff of bad smell, the wind was blowing from west to east which traced it down to New Jersey. The investigators found that one facility in Hudson County was processing Fenugreek syrup flavoring seeds. Fenugreek is a common ingredient in curry powders, and its extract is also used in artificial flavorings
New Jersey and city officials say the facility, operated by a company called Frutarom, does not appear to be breaking any laws so the mayor said it could be any other facility in this state.

The Three States Of Motion

Sir Isaac Newton created three laws of motion. The first law of motion states that an object at rest will stay at rest and an object in motion will satay in motion at constant velocity unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. An example of the first law is when you're riding a bike, when you stop pedaling you keep moving and when you stop, you stay there.The second law of motion shows how force, mass, and acceleration are related. An example of the second law is When you push a shopping cart. It shows force when you push it. When you push it harder, that shows acceleration, and when the cart is full it weighs more so you need to have more force and acceleration to move more mass. The third law of motion states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. An example of the third law is when you stretched a rubber band. When you stretch the rubber band, and let go, it comes back to its original shape, and that's the opposite reaction.

Barack Obama makes history

On January 21, 2009, Barack Hussein Obama made history by becoming the first African-American President of the United States. During his speach, he said "We need a new era of responsibility to help fix this nation". He will try to fix this nation by working with the government and encouraging everyone to feel better themselves,to regain respect for this nation, and build it up to be the great power it once was. Prior to the inauguration ceremony, citizens from all over the United States came and a sea of people stretched a mile down Washington Mall. Obama was sworn in as President of the United States and immediately started working on resolving the nations issues and the hard days that were soon to come. After that, Obama suggested that in order to repair the nation, it will require a little something from everyone. One of his famous statements from his address to the nation was "Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and begin again the work of remaking America." When President Obama swore his oath, he swore it on the same velvet bible that President Abraham Lincoln used at his inauguration. One of the changes that many people are hoping for is that finally people of all races will be treated equally. As President Obama stepped into the oval office, a note was left by our prior president, President George Bush, and it wished Obama well as he begins a fabulous new chapter in history. In conclusion, I think that President Obama will make some good changes and will serve well as a president for the next four years.

Barn Owl's Endangered

One of the many endangered species in New Jersey is the common barn owl. The common Barn Owl is found in basically all habitats but mostly found in low elevation in open habitats, such as grasslands, marshes, fields, open woodlands, small shrubs or low bushes and patches of cotton grass. They usually nest by day in hollow tress, cavities in cliffs and riverbanks, caves, church steeples, barn lofts and hay stacks or thick foliage. One reason for the endangerment of the Barn Owl is that rural habitats (where the barn owls home is) are being destroyed. Urban population buys out the land where Barn Owls live. Barn Owls limit rodent pest populations which benefit farmers and others. The Barn Owls population is decreasing because the use of rodent poison has resulted in a smaller food base for the owls. Natural nest sites in hollow trees are limited because of human disturbance of the nest during incubation may cause the nest to be abandoned by the mothers. Also young barns owls are eaten by raccoons. Other factors for the endangerment of the Barn Owl are bad weather, electrocution by power lines and accidental entanglement in farm and industrial machinery. Some scientists capture the owl that lost his nest and take care of it. The scientists also have artificial habitats until the barn owls die. The barn owl has been on the endangered list since the 1950’s and since then the population has gradually lowered.
